Bequest Language

Gift and estate planning arrangements can allow you to achieve multiple goals with the same resources and increase the value of a contribution both for you and Johnson University. Benefits provided by gift planning arrangements may include:

  • Receiving income for life at a competitive rate
  • Saving on capital gains and income taxes
  • Making a gift that will impact God's Kingdom
  • Honoring a loved one
  • Avoiding estate taxes
Our most common gift planning arrangements include:

  • Will or Living Trust Charitable Bequest. Include Johnson University in your estate plan, retain use of your funds while living, and leave a legacy for Christ at your death.
  • Charitable Gift Annuity. Receive income for life and save on taxes.
  • Charitable Remainder Trust. Avoid capital gains tax and receive income for life.
  • Life Estate Transfer. Leave your house to Johnson and continue to live in it the rest of your life.
In order to make a bequest, you should speak with your attorney and/or financial advisor. Your attorney and/or financial advisor can help you include a bequest to Johnson University in your estate plan. We have provided some basic bequest language to assist you and your attorney and/or financial advisor.

1. Outright Bequest

If you are considering making an outright bequest to Johnson University, we recommend the following language:

Bequest of a Specific Dollar Amount

I hereby, give, devise and bequeath $DOLLARS to Johnson University, a non-profit organization located at 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37998, Federal Tax ID #62-6001104, for Johnson University's general use and purpose.

Bequest of Specific Personal Property

I hereby, give, devise and bequeath DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY to Johnson University, a non-profit organization located at 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37998, Federal Tax ID #62-6001104, for Johnson University's general use and purposes.

Bequest of Specific Real Estate

I hereby give, devise and bequeath all of the right, title and interest in and to the real estate located at ADDRESS OR DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY to Johnson University, a non-profit organization located at 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37998, Federal Tax ID #62-6001104, for Johnson University's general use and purposes.

2. Restricted Bequest

In cases where donors are making a restricted bequest, we recommend that your attorney include the following provision to give Johnson University flexibility should it no longer be possible for our organization to use your gift as you originally intended:

If, in the judgment of the Board of Trustees of Johnson University, it shall become impossible for Johnson University to use this bequest to accomplish the specific purposes of this bequest, Johnson University may use the income and principal of this gift for such purpose or purposes as the Board determines is most closely related to the restricted purpose of my bequest.

3. Gift for a Permanent Fund

"I give, devise and bequeath the sum of $___________ OR ____________% of (describe)

OR all my right, title, and interest in and to _______________________(describe property) to establish a (select one: unrestricted, general scholarship, preaching scholarship, missions scholarship, teacher education scholarship) permanent fund at Johnson University, a not-for-profit organization incorporated in Tennessee, its principal office being located at 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville, TN 37998. If this purpose is no longer applicable/useful, the Board of Trustees may take action to use it for other areas of need. The name of this permanent fund should _____________________________________________________________________"
